Officers carried out the operation at an address along the Walshes estate at around 7.15 am yesterday.

Two men were arrested and are now being questioned by police.

A team of five officers carried out the raid and they were stunned to find the plants growing outside the property - with nine mature plants found in all.

Police said it was 'very unusual' to find cannabis plants being cultivated out in the open.

Usually they are grown in controlled conditions in rooms or warehouses using specialised lighting and other equipment.

Officers said there was no possibility the plants had been grown by accident as the crop had been carefully tended.

Canes had also been used to support the plants as they grew.

The plants had grown into a large clump which, with its distinctive shaped leaves, were clear to see.

Police said the street-value of the plants was not yet known.

Assorted powders were also found at the address and are suspected to be class-A drugs.

Tests are currently being carried out on the substances.

Neighbourhood officer for Stourport Pc Mark Edwards said it had been a very successful operation.

"It is very unusual to find plants growing outside. Usually they are found inside properties and with specialist equipment," he said.

"This was certainly not the case this time.

"These had grown to around 2.6 metres tall and had been tended."

He confirmed two men had been arrested during the raid. There were other people in the house at the time.

Pc Edwards urged anyone with information on drug growing in the area to get in touch with officers using the 101 number or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
