A leather settee, gas canisters and a wooden dining table were among piles of rubbish that were found dumped in a Staffordshire road this morning.

Police closed off Dark Lane, Lichfield, for more than an hour after a mass of garbage was left strewn across the country road, which serves as a connector route onto the Western Bypass.

Diversions were in place along Abnalls Lane and Ford Lane while workers cleared up the mess at around 9am.

The unsightly clutter stretched from one side of the road to the other and contained what appeared to be the remnants of a household clear out.

The debris also included a tent, numerous chunks of three-metre-long wood, garden furniture, chairs and sheets of plastic boarding.

Fly-tipping has become a regular problem across the West Midlands, with figures revealing that councils in the Black Country and Staffordshire received 13,298 reports of fly-tipping over the last year, but prosecuted only 12 people.

Police advised drivers to avoid the area while the clear-up operation took place.
