The extra first-floor space at Central Jamia Mosque, in Binfield Street, will be used as an additional prayer hall while the second floor would be used for conferences.

The scheme was unanimously approved by a Sandwell Council planning committee on Wednesday.

A report published ahead of the meeting states: "The extension would also incorporate a new entrance and staircase with an elaborately designed front elevation comprising feature brickwork and large glazed panelling.

"A new minaret tower to match the existing tower would also be constructed adjacent to the existing two-storey element of the building.

"The applicant had indicated that one additional job would be created as a result of the development."

Council planners received a petition signed by 19 residents in support of the extension and a further petition signed by 14 residents opposing the plans.

Concerns had been raised about parking at the mosque and an increase in noise once the extension is completed.
