The lifelike cake is worth around £200

It was the raffle prize organised by St George's Vets at the Birmingham Dogs Home's base.

The event gave people a chance to see the work the charity does in re-homing abandoned dogs and raise vital funds to help them carry out that work.

The cake was created by Rose Macefield, of Rose Macefield School of Sugarcraft in Coseley. Its a vanilla madeira, chocolate and lemon cake which is worth £200.

Sunnyside manager Karen Doy said: "The cake was fantastic - I couldn't believe it was a cake, it was so lifelike it was incredible.

"It was an absolutely fantastic day, the best year ever. We managed to raise £6,300 for the stray dogs in our care."

Each year the kennels house about 2,000 stray dogs.

As well as being an important fundraising event, Mrs Doy said the staff always look forward to the open days and the chance to catch up with some of the dogs they have cared for in the past.

She said: "Many people attended and it was lovely to see dogs we had re-homed in the past come back to participate in the show."

Birmingham Dogs Home was founded in 1892, and now has a purpose-built base in Bartholomew Street, Birmingham as well as the Sunnyside site in Dark Lane, Coven.

Sunnyside opened in 2002 and is a state-of-the-art £2m facility housing 100 strays, complete with veterinary consulting room, and isolation unit for dogs requiring special, one-to-one care and treatment.

St George's Vets provide all the veterinary care for the dogs during their stay at the homes, give vaccinations and carry out health checks before the dogs can be re-homed, and carrying out any necessary treatment or surgery.

Each year the veterinary group is the main sponsor of the Sunnyside open day, with vets running and judging the dog show which features 16 different categories including the waggiest tail, best trick and fancy dress.
