And the shoppers clearly had a sweet tooth as sugar and chocolates were the biggest sellers.

One of the biggest sellers was Whitworth's sugar, which shifted more than 340kg. Other favourites included Cadbury's Twirl, Wispa, Flake, KitKat, McVities Jaffa Cakes and Heinz Beans.

Trading director Richard Lancaster said: "We're thrilled with the success of the opening weekend in Bilston and to have reached the 600th milestone. It was fantastic to see the excitement and anticipation residents had for the store opening and we look forward to continuing the success."

The shop opened at 9.30am last Friday and more than 150 people queued to get in.

At the store's opening, CEO Jim McCarthy hinted that more Poundlands could be on the way to the Black Country, as well as more jobs.

He said: "We could see more stores opening in Bilston and the Black Country. We love opening stores in the heartland.

"We've got two of our distribution centres in the Midlands so the economics are good.

"The customers are great, they love value, they appreciated Poundland and we love them to bits. Wherever opportunities arise in the Midlands for profitable Poundland stores to open we will definitely do that."
