Patients were having initial assessments in the corridors until cubicles became free but despite this bosses, at the Wolverhampton hospital said the accident and emergency pressure had eased over the year.

Their record-breaking day was on Monday, April 27. This was part of its busiest-ever month, with 10,156 attendances in April.

Gwen Nuttall, chief operating officer for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: "Monday July 13 was a very busy day in A&E and we had 393 patients, with some patients having to have an initial assessments in the corridor until a cubicle became free.

"We know this is not ideal for patients or staff but we do minimise any stay a patient has on the corridor, which is staffed by trained nurses and doctors to ensure that patient safety is never compromised.

"We always strive to provide the best quality care we can. In November our brand new ED will be opening which will further improve the patient experience and will be one of the best centres in the UK."

Records have been smashed during the past couple of years with patients flooding the unit.

An influx of patients from Staffordshire in the wake of the dissolution of Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust has only added to the problem.
