Capturing the sun breaking through sparse clouds, shining down on green fields and rows and rows of poppies, it is a striking image which instantly sings summer.

But this picture wasn't taken in some far-flung location but Trescott Ford, Wolverhampton, by keen photographer David Smith.

Mr Smith, who grew up in Penn and now lives in Coven, took advantage of a beautiful sunrise on the hottest day of the year to get the snap.

He said: "I drive through the area a lot with work and I see the field quite often.

"For a long time I had been thinking that I should get down there with my camera when we get a nice morning.

"The sun was out and I thought it would be a great chance to use my filters, because the sky was very bright.

"I was suffering horribly with my hay fever, sitting in this field waiting for the perfect shot, but it was worth it.

"The sun was shining right on the poppies and everything was just ideal."

Mr Smith, 39, works as a valve technician and has been interested in photography for many years.

However, it was only in the last 12 months that he started taking his hobby more seriously, after meeting a fellow snapper while on a walk, who encouraged him to join a Facebook group for photographers.

Seeing the work of others has inspired him to dedicate more time and money into photography, leading to high quality shots like this.

He said: "I have definitely started to take photography more seriously over the last year.

"I joined a Facebook group and started learning more about techniques, cameras and how people go about getting the best out of a shot.

"When I started, my work was all scenery but now I am interested in portraits, sports, all sorts of things.

"I invested in a new camera and have even took photographs at a christening and a wedding, which is good because you meet new people."
