But hearts were as well after a packed crowd witnessed a heartfelt proposal like no other.

Dressed in the Wolverhampton Wolves Speedway kit and on a bike, Glenys Ball got down on one knee to propose to renew her wedding vows with husband Alan - and he said yes.

The 52-year-old gave her husband of 30 years - a huge Wolves speedway fan - the shock of his life during the half-time break of the Elite League clash against Lakeside at Monmore Green Stadium on Saturday.

The pair, who live in Codsall, are now planning for a ceremony in July next year – the month they got married in 1985

Glenys told Alan, 51, she was off to 'get a cup of coffee' when actually she made her way down to the track fully kitted with a helmet on posing as a new player in a move secretly organised by her and with support from the club's promoter Chris Van Straaten.

Glenys then whipped off her helmet and speaking in front of a microphone told a stunned Alan to come down onto the track with the words 'you were not expecting this were you'.

She then went down on one knee with ring in hand in front of many fans before her day turned to complete joy when her offer to renew their vows was accepted - just months before their 30th wedding anniversary which falls on July 6.

The pair, who live in Codsall, are now planning for a ceremony in July next year - the month they got married in 1985.

Glenys said: "It was a memorable day and one we'll never forget.

"We've been married for 30 years but recently have been through a bit of a rough patch and nearly went our separate ways.

"But we've managed to talk things through and this was my way of getting the message across of how much I love Alan.

Glenys said:

"I had to smuggle all my speedway gear into the stadium without him noticing, luckily with the help of my son Haydon I managed it without too much difficulty. "

Alan, who has been watching Wolverhampton Wolves speedway matches at Monmore Green Stadium for a number of years, said it was a lovely day.

"It was a fantastic day, definitely something I wasn't expecting," he said.

"Glenys did a great job in keeping it secret, it was a big shock. The ceremony is going to be a very special occasion. We are all very excited."
