Fire crews went to the property in Bittern Walk to find the householder outside and smoke spewing from a first floor front bedroom window.

The room was filled with smoke and flames when they arrived.

Firefighters used breathing gear and a hose to tackle the blaze at the semi-detached premises after the incident was reported by a neighbour shortly after 9.05pm last night.

Watch Commander Brian Morris, of Stourbridge Fire Station, said: "The fire began accidentally. The lady thought she had put the cigarette out and obviously it wasn't out and it set fire to some clothing. And 60 per cent of the bedroom was affected by flames and the room was smoke logged.

"The lady was in a state of shock, but otherwise injured."

He added that the 48-year-old woman was checked over at the scene as a precaution.

Firefighters from the town and from Stourbridge attended the scene.
