British Transport Police (BTP) is now appealing for witnesses to the attack and have released CCTV images of a youth they want to speak to.

The assault happened at around 3pm on May 7, shortly after the 2.50pm Wolverhampton to Walsall service pulled into the station.

PC Stuart Williamson said: "One of the youths failed to show a valid ticket for his journey.

"He was asked to leave the train at Coseley, and was accompanied from the service by the member of staff.

"As they stood on the platform, the youth headbutted the victim. His companion left the train and joined in the assault, punching and kicking the victim."

The assault only stopped when a member of the public intervened, and the youths left the station.

The train manager, a 26-year-old man from London, sustained cuts and bruises in the attack.

PC Williamson said: "Incidents like this one are rare, but when they occur, BTP works hard to bring those responsible to justice.

"Staff and passengers should be able to use the network without the fear of violence."
