Wolves stars line up for match in memory of Margot

Wolves legends will take part in a charity match to raise money in memory of a toddler who died from leukaemia.

Jody Craddock, Andy Mutch, Mel Eves, Robbie Dennison and Don Goodman are among the players as Wolves All Stars take on Wednesbury Athletic at the end of the month.

Money will be raised for the Team Margot Foundation which was set up in memory of two-year-old Margot Martini who died last year after a year-long battle with two rare forms of blood cancer. Her appeal for a bone marrow donor sparked a worldwide appeal and was backed by celebrities including former Doctor Who actor David Tennant.

Margot's mother Vicki grew up in Essington and still has family in the village and Wolverhampton.

The match will take place on May 31 at 3pm with doors opening at Wolverhampton Sporting CFC in Hazel Road, Great Wyrley.

Organiser Gav Ingles said: "I worked on the original donor swab day at the Mount Hotel in Tettenhall last February and when the football season started in August 2014 I got the club a new kit and I asked Team Margot if we could put the logo on the front and the web address on the back to help raise awareness, because football is such a favourite hobby, and it would get the awareness spread around the Wolverhampton and Birmingham areas through us playing in these areas.

"And with the family being from the area I thought if we could arrange a game vs Wolves All Stars, it can promote the foundation and also take the awareness aim to new people through the football avenue."

Tickets cost £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.

In a separate event, a drive to register stem cell donors will take place at The Croft in Hydes Road, Wednesbury on Saturday May 23.

Organisers Sarah Bagnall and Claire Bull are hoping potential bone marrow donors will be able to join the register by giving a swab of their DNA between noon and 6.30pm.

There will also be a barbecue, face and nail painting, bouncy castles and games for children.

Charity Delete Blood Cancer UK said the fundraising efforts of Team Margot will lead to lives being saved after thousands of people across the country have already joined the country's stem cell donation register.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Team Margot raised £185,000 for the charity which will cover the registration costs of many new potential blood stem cell donors.

Team Margot continues to work to recruit more potential lifesavers in Margot's memory to increase the life chances of all those in need of a blood stem cell donation. Delete Blood Cancer UK is running a series of future recruitment events in 2015 in partnership with Team Margot to enable even more people to sign up onto the register of potential donors.
