Members say they are sickened by the break-in and warn they will struggle to continue if they cannot afford to make the premises secure.

A gang stole the one ton safe holding £2,500 cash as well as taking £2,000 worth of alcohol from the 65-year-old club.

They also caused around £5,000 worth of damage to the premises in Summerhill.

The thieves also escaped with a 42inch TV along with charity money from a lottery and raffle after disabling the burglar alarm by cutting the phone lines and smashing their way into the club through the back doors between 11.30pm on Friday night and 5.50am Saturday morning.

They ransacked rooms, wrenched doors of their hinges and crowbarred the steel safe that had been screwed to the floor of an office at the club that is the base for the local British Legion branch that raised a record £44,551 for the Poppy Day Appeal last November.
