Mrs Fowler was discovered by her son Stephen on November 5 at her home in Edison Road, Beechdale.

It was suspected a dropped cigarette or match in the living room may have sparked the blaze.

Smethwick Coroner's Court was told that Mr Fowler went to visit his mother at around 10am and saw smoke coming out of the property.

The 79 year old's body was later discovered by firefighters.

Coroner officer Mr Russell Williams told the hearing: "Police attended the property after being notified there had been a house fire and a body had been found. Stephen Fowler had attended the address and had gone into the house.

"He was prevented from seeing as the property was filled with thick black smoke.

"The cause of death is still to be ascertained."

Coroner Mr Zafar Siddique adjourned the inquest until January 20.
