More misery on roads as major routes around Wolverhampton gridlocked

Parts of Wolverhampton ground to a halt as weekend roadworks city centre spilled over to this morning's rush hour.

Work by transport authority Centro on Bilston Island was due to finish at 6am.

But workmen were still there until around 8.30am, causing long delays around the ring road.

The Bilston Island exit towards Ring Road St David's, by the back of the bus station, had been closed over the weekend as part of a £4.5m project.

There were also delays of more than an hour on the M6 owing to a broken down vehicle between Junction 10 and Junction 9 on the southbound side of the motorway.

And a two-car accident in Brewood on the A5 blocked the road between the Gailey Island and Ivy House Lane, causing further rush hour problems.

Motorists also faced problems throughout the weekend on Tettenhall Road and Compton Road, while businesses in the area suffered huge drops in footfall.

Many drivers heading out of the city centre reported delays of up to an hour as part of Bridgnorth Road in Compton was shut down for emergency repair works.

The chaos spread on to roads in the surrounding areas, with temporary traffic lights at The Rock in Tettenhall forcing traffic up Henwood Road.

The roadworks have sparked outrage among motorists, residents and business owners, many of whom have become frustrated at the constant barrage of blocked roads in and around the city.

One driver, Micheal Lockley, said it had taken him 50 minutes to complete a trip that usually takes 10 minutes along Compton Road.

And Stephen Markham, aged 34, from Dudley, said he was stuck on a gridlocked Tettenhall Road for around an hour on Saturday lunch time.

"It is beyond a joke," he said. There are no signs leading up to the roadworks so people are basically driving onto a car park. Driving around Wolverhampton has become a nightmare."

The work is set to last for 10 days.
