Residents near The Manhattan today expressed their concerns about the pub and surrounding area after a man was stabbed.

Police were called to the site on Wolverhampton Road, Heath Town, just before midnight on Sunday to find a man with knife wounds to the abdomen.

People have now complained of ongoing concerns with anti-social behaviour in and around the pub.

A Neighbourhood Watch warden for the area, who did not want to be named, said: "For the people who live around here, the Manhattan is a pain in the neck.

"It is past a joke now. Heath Town has a bad enough reputation as it is and we want to make the area a better place but things like this are such a setback.

"There isn't massive trouble every week but there are lots of issues we have to deal with, such as too many cars parking on the streets and rubbish on a Monday morning."

A male resident of Church Street added: "We have to regularly deal with anti-social behaviour, crime, and parking issues coming from those who use the pub.

"I am alarmed that somebody has brought a knife into our community and used it to hurt someone."

Plans were put forward in 2009 to demolish the pub, near New Cross Hospital, to make way for a new £4.5 million GP surgery and health centre but eventually the centre was built on the site of the former Duke of York pub in Wednesfield Road.

Councillor for Heath Town Milkinder Jaspal said: "The news is surprising to me and obviously the concern here is the issue with the knife.

"This is a very rare occurrence but this sort of thing needs to be dealt with so people can feel safe in their community.

"I know that the Manhattan is used by a lot of people and is considering a meeting place for a number of residents."

West Midlands Police spokesman Sarah Buxton said police were investigating and asked for people to come forward.

"The wounding is believed to be an isolated matter and officers remain at the scene carrying out inquiries," she said. "Anyone who was in the pub at the time and who saw anything which may help with the investigation is asked to call 101."

Every effort was made to contact the pub's owner but they were unavailable for comment.
