Dennis, 64, was joined by fellow comic Miles Jupp, TV presenter Susannah Constantine and EastEnders actress Tameka Empson in tackling the gruelling ‘Mudathon’ course.

The quartet took on the challenge as part of their ongoing ‘Famously Unfit… for Sport Relief’ series which will air next month.

This show will follow the four celebs over 10 weeks as they run, row and swim their way back to fitness – with the Tough Guy event the culmination of their training.

Former Olympian, world renowned sports scientist and physical activity expert Professor Greg Whyte OBE has helped train up the Sport Relief team alongside Dr Zoe Williams, presenter of BBC Two’s Trust Me, I’m A Doctor.

The Mudathon at a farm in Perton near Wolverhampton saw people put through their paces on a gruelling seven-mile course.

Competitors needed to clear more than 250 obstacles – from balancing logs to net walls – and also saw people wading through freezing, muddy water.

It was established with the aim of raising money charity, and one of the causes it supports is an initiative to help disabled people find work

All 2,000 competitors who hit an agreed fundraising target had their entry fees returned

Previous events included a long country-running section but the course has been altered to include more obstacles.

Organiser Billy Wilson said: “We had people from 23 different countries – Russia, Sweden, France, Spain, Gibraltar and Italy.

“And the Lord is good, we’ve been doing it for 31 years and every year it’s a miracle when the clouds part and the sun comes out.

“Saturday was an horrendous day but it all went off really well on Sunday.

“It was fantastic to see such great support. People know this event started out here and they are delighted to visit our home near Wolverhampton and the district.

“That’s our object – flying the flag for Wolverhampton across the world.

“I have got that pride in where I was born and I want to get the kids out there and help keep them moving.”

As well as international visitors, competitors also flocked to the event from across the Black Country and Staffordshire – and beyond.

Mr Wilson said he is hoping to take Tough Guy in a new direction and support more charitable enterprises.

He established the event, which is held annually at South Perton Farm, in 1987. It is widely seen as one of the toughest assault courses in the world.

Mr Wilson said getting more charities on board will help boost the local area. He went on: “Bringing people together is fabulous. We’re planning to move in a new direction now – we are changing Tough Guy quite a bit.

"A lot of charities want to get on board and the growth has been marvellous. It’s always nice to see a wonderful day and a wonderful turnout.

“We had great smiles and great comments on Facebook. It’s a pleasure to sit back afterwards and be able to say it went so well.”

Famously Unfit… for Sport Relief has been made for BBC Two by Little Gem. It features visits to a number of Comic Relief funded projects in the UK.

Liz Warner, chief executive officer at Comic Relief, said: “Sport Relief is about all of us doing something active to help raise money for brilliant causes.

“But these celebrities have gone the extra mile - literally - and put their bodies publicly through extreme rigour.

“We can only celebrate their bravery, watch in awe and donate. Thank you Susannah, Miles, Tameka and Les.”
