The death is being treated as unexplained, but it is not believed to be suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When ambulance crews arrived they found two patients, a man and a woman, who had been removed from the property by the fire service after they were found unresponsive inside.

"Sadly, the woman was confirmed dead by ambulance staff at the scene.

“The 75-year-old man was already receiving oxygen therapy from the fire service."

The spokeswoman said his condition is thought to be serious.

The back door of the property, which backs onto Cannock Park, appeared to have been removed.

Builder Chris Ncube, aged 45, from Edgbaston, was working on site at a house on the road when the incident happened.

He said he saw emergency services suddenly arriving at the scene, but did not know what had happened.

"The fire brigade and police arrived this in the morning with police," said Mr Ncube.

"We just saw that the police had closed the road but there were no sirens going off at all. The road was just sectioned off at both sides.

"There was parked police cars and police officers looking inside the house."

Another resident, who lived nearby, but asked not to be named, said: "I saw the fire brigade and an ambulance and lots of police.

"The firemen and ambulance left after a while but police stayed around.

"I didn't hear a loud noise or anything - just saw all the police cars outside.

"It's awful news [to hear someone has died] I hope the other person involved is going to be okay."
