A total of £50,000 is being shared out across South Staffordshire and Cannock for projects which use sport to help men with mental and physical health issues.

The Community Foundation for Staffordshire is distributing the money which has been donated by betting company GVC Holdings.

The foundation is looking for projects which will increase participation, build new skills and build community cohesion among men.

Leanne Macpherson, grants manager at the foundation, urged organisations to apply for funding as soon as possible.

"We are looking for ideas that will specifically benefit those with mental health issues as a separate initiative to their normal activities that will have a direct impact on those most in need," she said.

"For example, a community club employing a football coach with mental health training expertise to run special extra evening training sessions.

"We want to see specific activities that will create new opportunities for people, and we are looking forward to hearing from individuals and clubs.”

The scheme is open for applications now through the website staffsfoundation.org.uk/grants/gvc-onward-fund/

The closing date is October 28.
