Fire crews arrived to find the unusual method had been used to tackle the fire after the motorist pulled over.

The car had pulled up in Clent Road, in Oldbury, at around 6.25pm yesterday as the engine caught fire.

And the driver attempted to put out the flames using milk and Innocent fruit smoothies before calling 999.

Oldbury fire crews tweeted pictures of the damage and the used drinks bottles after they arrived to put out the blaze.

They tweeted: "The driver of this car whose engine caught fire attacked the flames with @innocent smoothies and milk before dialling 999! #NeverSeenBefore"

Having seen the aftermath of the fire, the smoothie drinks maker tweeted: "We'd love to replace those smoothies - just to soften the blow a bit."

West Midlands Fire Service said the fire was accidental and crews were able to leave the scene within the hour.
