The 62-year-old cyclist suffered a cardiac arrest and has been left with spinal injuries after the crash on the A461 Duncan Edwards Way in Dudley.

The full extent of the damage to his spine is not yet known. No other vehicles are thought to have been involved and detectives are currently unsure how he was so seriously injured.

Emergency services were sent to the scene at the dual carriageway's junction with Flood Street at around 8.45pm on Tuesday and paramedics gave the man advanced life support.

The cyclist was taken to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he remained on Wednesday afternoon.

The road was closed in the aftermath of the crash as collision investigators examined the scene, where the white van involved was left at the side of the road.

The driver of the van is helping police with enquiries and officers are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a shocking collision.

"The cyclist remains is a very serious condition and the full extent of the damage to his spine is not yet known.

"It’s not yet clear how he came to sustain such significant injuries and my officers are working hard to establish what happened.

"I would urge anyone with any information about what happened, who was in the area at the time or possibly has dashcam footage to get in touch.

"As always our thoughts are with the cyclist and his family and they’re being supported by specialist officers at this time."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: ""On arrival we found a male cyclist in a critical condition.

"Crews administered advanced life support on scene before taking him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment."
