Letter: On the day you featured a lady celebrating her 100th birthday with champagne and a cigarette, your headline reported that firemen are being ordered to allow two hours to elapse before attending a house in which someone has been smoking.
I read with interest R A Sargeant’s letter of October 14, “Don’t waste your vote”, and C Vermont’s following letter in praise of it.
Letter: There have been lots of mixed messages from different parties about the future of the Walsall to Wolverhampton rail service.
It was interesting to read the recent letter from Mr Nash recalling the past and how different things are today from bygone days.
Letter: With regards to Councillor Wakefield’s comments about the overwhelming support for the proposed incinerator at Four Ashes, perhaps he or someone else would like to answer a few questions:
I’ve read with interest about Councillor Anthony Harris’s much-publicised campaign to oust “unsightly yellow speed cameras” from Walsall.
Having severe osteo-arthritis in my right hip,and waiting for a hip replacement I find it increasingly difficult to get near stores for shopping etc.
The current so-called credit crunch can be blamed only on two things – capitalism and individual greed.
I see that there is a £253m gap in funding towards the extension of the Midland Metro.

Peter Rhodes’ point about bygone juries acquitting bread thieves when the alternative was hanging, is a sad reminder of our past failures with law and order.
