Stafford hospital crisis: More than 6,400 sign our petition

More than 6,400 people have now backed the fight to immediately re-instate children's A&E services at County Hospital in Stafford.

A petition was set up by the Express & Star in the wake of the closure of the children's services after they were deemed 'clinically unsafe' by health bosses.

The closure has meant children are being forced to travel miles to hospitals in Stoke, Walsall and Wolverhampton to be treated, placing extra demands on already stretched departments.

The petition, available on change.org, has just over 6,400 signatures - despite being live for just over two weeks.

One of those who signed the petition is Jane Faulkner from Stafford. She said: "I'm signing this petition because I feel Stafford and the surrounding villages need and deserve the County Hospital to be just that.We have lots of new houses filled with families who do not deserve to have to drive miles to get their injured or poorly kids to be seen by a medical practitioner. I understand the financial constraints but people's lives are at stake here."

Rhys Evans, also from Stafford, added: "I've personally experienced being turned away with an injured child. Why can't they be seen at the normal A&E like other hospitals. It is a good unit and the staff there do a fantastic job, which reassures the children that can be frightened."
