The new 29 bed elective orthopaedic unit, which forms part of a £250 million investment into NHS services in Staffordshire, will care for and rehabilitate patients who have undergone orthopaedic surgery.

The launch of the new unit will also allow other areas to decant to allow further works to take place.

Respiratory patients on Ward 12 will move to Ward 8 and Ward 6 from Friday to allow another new £3m ward to be constructed.

At the same time the Specialised Neurosciences Unit will temporarily move to Ward 6 to allow works to take place on Ward 7.

Janice Wood, Sister, said: "The move into the new ward over the weekend was successful and I would like to thank all the staff involved in the move for their dedication and hard work in making this move seamless for our patients.

"The new ward has state-of-the-art equipment and provides excellent facilities for the expansion of the elective orthopaedic service at County."

Three further wards will open at County Hospital in the next 18 months along with a refurbished Chemotherapy Unit and A&E Unit.

The A&E refurbishment is due to be completed by December 2016.
