Stafford Hospital's maternity department, which will close under plans to shake up services, was given a score of 173.1 out of a possible 200.

Women were asked a series of different questions covering 20 topics, including communication with patients and partners, and compassion shown by staff.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust scored 109.8. The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust was rated at 171.1. The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust achieved 166.3 and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust was scored 162.3.

Anne Mellor, head of midwifery at Stafford Hospital, said: "We are thrilled with these results – it's great to know that patients are so positive about our service, and the survey helps us to identify areas where we can improve."

Results taken from a total of 152 patients showed Stafford Hospital received its highest score of 9.7 out of 10 for partners being involved as much as they wanted in the birth.
