The fire at the back of shops in Castle Street, Coseley, destroyed two vehicles and a refrigeration unit on Tuesday evening.

A man and three women trapped by the heat and smoke in a first-floor flat were unable to escape the building and were rescued by firefighters using triple extension ladders.

Their two pet dogs were lifted to safety by crews.

A fire service spokesman said the group were unable to flee the building because of the proximity of the flames.

Fifteen firefighters dashed to the scene after the alarm was raised at 9.25pm. A van and a car were gutted in the blaze, along with a small refrigeration unit.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
