Ambulance crews said the two casualties, in their 20s, were saved by the roll cage and the fact they were wearing seatbelts.

Their car careered through bollards near the junction of Church Road and Church Lane near Stonnall, Walsall, at around 4.30pm on Sunday before coming to rest on its roof.

Both men escaped serious injury although the passenger was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital after being immobilised on a stretcher while the driver also went along as a precaution.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "There were two patients.

"A man in his 20s, who was a passenger, complained of back pain and minor injuries to his face and leg.

"He got himself out of the car and was walking around when the ambulance arrived but was immobilised using a scoop stretcher and taken to Walsall Manor Hospital.

"Another man in his 20s, who was the driver, was also walking around on arrival and was fully conscious.

Paramedic Ash Mullinder was part of the ambulance crew which attended the scene.

He uploaded pictures of the badly damaged car on its roof which showed the front bumper hanging off and the windscreen smashed.
