Flowers have been left at the scene today as an investigation gets under way into the crash.

People visited the scene of the tragedy to pay tribute to the man who died.

Mark Horsfield, who didn't know the victim but was laying flowers by the roadside, said: "He was only a young lad.

"There was nothing left of the car. The paramedics were here really quick but there was nothing that could be done.

"It was the worst I'd ever seen and two were seriously hurt as well."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "On arrival, ambulance staff found a car that had suffered extensive damage.

"Unfortunately, one of those in the car was found to be in cardiac arrest. He was pulled from the vehicle with the help of other road users who had stopped and advanced life support was carried out by ambulance staff but sadly it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The two other people in the car were left with serious multiple injuries and taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance.

No one in the lorry was hurt.
