The man, in his 70s, suffered serious head injuries and was found by two school pupils just before 7am today.

He was discovered lying in a passage near the Bell Inn, Delph Road, where he is believed to have fallen.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, alerted police and took the man to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Meanwhile police cordoned off the area and launched an investigation, but officers are now confident the incident was not suspicious.

Detective Inspector Colin Mattinson, from West Midlands Police CID, thanked the local community and praised the two students who treated the man.

He said: "After speaking to a number of witnesses and trawling CCTV we are satisfied that that the man has taken ill and sustained his injuries from a fall and that there is no criminal involvement.

"He remains in hospital and will be spoken to in due course.

"We would like to thank the local community for helping us with our enquiries especially the two pupils from Thorns Community Centre in Brierley Hill who initially raised the alarm and provided first aid, they did a fantastic job."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith added: "We were called at 6.46am to Delph Road in Brierley Hill.

"The patient was in an alley next to the Bell pub.

"It was a man in his 70s and the call said the patient was unconscious.

"One ambulance attended and found a man with a serious head injury and reduced level of consciousness.

"He was taken to hospital."
