Woman left with multiple injuries after being hit by car outside Spar shop near Wolverhampton

A woman in her 80s was taken to hospital after being hit by a car outside a convenience store.

The accident happened at Spar in Compton, Wolverhampton, at around 11.30am, when a silver 4x4 appeared to mount the pavement before hitting the woman and the side of the shop building.

The elderly lady was given advanced trauma care for multiple injuries at the scene before being taken to New Cross Hospital by road ambulance. Midlands Air Ambulance were also in attendance.

Malcolm Crump, owner of the store in Bridgnorth Road, said: "From what I understand a car has mounted the pavement and hit an elderly lady.

"It hit the wall of the shop as well. She was taken to hospital. The air ambulance was here as well.

"Police said she had a few broken bones but she was conscious throughout.

"It must have happened at about 11.35am. I was in the shop and I just heard this loud bang. It shook the shop, there was products flying off the shelves.

"I rushed outside and just saw the car and the lady there. The driver was just sitting there in shock."

A bollard was ripped from the pavement and debris was left scattered on the pavement.

Mr Crump added: "I'm not sure of the lady's name, she is a regular customer of ours who we see a lot. We'll be hoping that she is alright now."

A West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman said: "We were called at around midday after reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

"Two ambulances were in attendance and a Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter from RAF Cosford also attended.

"We treated a woman in her 80s who sustained multiple injuries. She was given advanced trauma care and taken to New Cross Hospital via road ambulance."
