'Serious collision' closes A449 between Wolverhampton and Wombourne

A "serious" collision closed the A449 between Wolverhampton and Wombourne this evening.

The road was closed in both directions between Lloyd Hill Island and Wodehouse Island from just after 5pm until late into the evening.

Drivers were asked to avoid the route.

Staffordshire Police said: "This is a serious collision we were called to at just before 5.20pm."

National Express West Midlands bus service tweeted to warn commuters of disruptions on the road.

Thye said: "Due to a road accident on Stourbridge Road, services 255 and 256 are diverted to Stourbridge only via Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton Road East, Northway, Gospel End Road, Wodehouse Lane & Stourbridge Road."

Twitter user Stu Hale said: "We couldn't see anything as we went round to Springhill lane.

"Wombourne is snarled up too as the lights are being turned out.

"Bad congestion on Orton Lane both ways."
