Emergency services battled to save the man, aged in his 70s, after the fire at the house in Bobbington, between Wombourne and Stourbridge.

But the man was declared dead at the scene after the blaze which happened at around 6.50pm yesterday.

Staffordshire Police were called to reports of a blaze with people trapped at the home in Six Ashes Road.

Fire crews also attended and officers found the house's garage in flames with a man trapped.

A second man and a woman were checked over at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

Emergency services remained at the scene today as investigations get under way into the cause of the blaze.

Emergency services will remain at the house conducting an investigation into the cause

Sgt Lee Wareing, of Staffordshire Police, said: "This fire is not being treated as suspicious.

"Witness accounts indicate it was a tragic accident but we need to establish how the blaze started.

"The scene presents complications as there has been damage to the structure of the building.

"Unfortunately, we anticipate it will be a few days before we have concluded our examination of the scene."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "On arrival at the scene, ambulance staff discovered a garage that was well alight.

"Sadly a man was found inside. Unfortunately nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"A second man and a woman were also assessed at the scene and discharged with minor injuries."

Staffordshire Fire Service said a single storey garage which was attached to the property was well alight when firefighters attended.

Crews from Womborune, Kinver and Codsall were joined by crews from the West Midlands Fire Service to extinguish the fire.

Staffordshire Fire Service's group manager for the west of the county, Dermot Hogan, said: "This is a very tragic incident in which a man sadly lost his life.

"As a service we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of friends of the victim. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway today.

"We would strongly urge people never to try to tackle fires themselves. If you see a fire, leave the building immediately and call 999."

One crew from Cannock is still at the scene today.
