Cyclist critically injured after collision outside Dudley McDonald's

A cyclist was left critically injured after a collision involving a car  outside a McDonald's.

It happened on Kent Street in the Upper Gornal area at around 6.15pm last night, and drivers were asked to avoid the area while police worked at the scene.

The cyclist, in his 50s, was initially described as being in a critical condition. The car driver refused any treatment.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "Initially, the rider, a man in his 50's was in a critical condition with a potentially serious head injury as well as internal injuries.

"Due to his condition, crews rapidly treated him at the scene before taking him on blue lights to the nearest A&E Department, Russells Hall Hospital."

He was then taken to the major trauma centre at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, arriving just before 1.20am today.
