Netherton crash: Motorcyclist injured after road smash
A motorcyclist has suffered serious injuries in a crash with a car - with his helmet flung more than 160ft by the force of the impact.
The smash happened in Saltwells Road, close to the junction with Crabourne Road, Netherton, shortly after 7.30am.
Police officers have closed the road near to The Bunch of Bluebells pub while investigations continue.
The bike rider, a 21-year-old man, suffered multiple serious injuries with several fractures and abrasions.
He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which is a specialist trauma centre, for treatment.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, Claire Brown, said: "When crews arrived they found a motorcyclist who had come off his bike after a collision with a car; the biker's helmet had come off in the collision and was found 50 metres down the road."
She added: "He was given pain relief and oxygen to help stabilise his condition whilst his injuries were carefully immobilised."
She said the driver of the car, a man, sustained minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman, Kate Baker, said: "Officers are currently at the scene and a diversion is in place, motorists are advised to avoid the area at this time."
