"My world is broken, going to miss you so so much. You will never be out of my heart or mind."

Another message said: "Goodnight our cheeky chappy. We will miss your beautiful smile."

In a statement West Midlands Police said: "Police were alerted by colleagues from the ambulance service to a collision between a Transit Tipper and a child just before 3.50pm on Keats Road, Wolverhampton.

"Sadly, a three-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Specialist officers from our family liaison unit are now supporting the family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time."

The driver of the vehicle was "very shaken", West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A spokesman said: "When the first ambulance arrived, a few minutes later, they advised that sadly there was nothing that could be done to save the child and to stand the aircraft down.
