The baby, who was travelling in red Ford Focus, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, several other people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened at about 8.50pm and the road was closed for several hours while emergency services and collision investigators worked to clear the area and carry out enquiries to try and establish what happened.

Sergeant Chris Ridge from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A young baby has tragically died, this is devastating for her family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.

"This is a busy road and we have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene but we would still like to hear from anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to an officer.

"It is essential that we piece together exactly what happened and I am keen to hear from anyone who can help us build a clear picture of the collision.

"Specialist officers from our Family Liaison Unit are now supporting the family as they try and come to terms with their loss."

The Collision Investigation Unit can be contacted on 101.
