Police say the 88-year-old woman was crossing at the junction when she was struck by a silver VW Golf.

The incident happened at the junction of Bloxwich Road and Leamore Lane, near Leamore, just before midday yesterday.

The woman was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital with critical injuries but died later that evening.

The 25-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and gave a voluntary interview to police officers.

He has been released pending further inquiries.

West Midlands Police's Collision Investigation Unit is investigation and is appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

Pc Julie Lynam said: "It's a very busy intersection; we've spoken to some witnesses already but I have no doubt more drivers will have seen what happened and continued on their way perhaps not realising the severity of the collision.

"I would ask anyone that saw the collision – or the silver Volkswagen driving along Leamore Lane – and who's not yet spoken to us to get in touch on the 101 number quoting the log number 1045 13/08."

The collision happened at around 11.50am.
