Two women fight for their lives after being hit by car in Great Wyrley

Two women, including one in a wheelchair, were left fighting for their lives after a crash that left a road shut for four hours on Saturday.

The incident happened on Jones Lane in Great Wyrley, South Staffordshire, near to the junction with Jacob's Hall Lane.

A black Ford Focus collided with two women and a dog on the country road at around 8.25am, according to Staffordshire Police.

The two women, including one in a wheelchair, were treated at the scene by West Midlands Ambulance Service before being airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Their condition is described as 'critical' by the police, while the driver of the car is uninjured.

The dog was also injured but is believed to have survived.

The road was shut for some four hours while officers examined the scene to help identify the cause of the crash.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "At 8.25am on Saturday July 30, 2016 emergency services were called to reports of a serious road traffic collision on Jones Lane near to the junction with Jacob's Hall Lane, Great Wyrley, South Staffordshire.

"A black coloured Ford Focus had been in collision with two females, one of whom was in a wheelchair. A dog was also injured as a result of the incident.

"The two patients, both from the South Staffordshire area, were treated at the scene by medics from West Midlands Ambulance Service and both were airlifted from the scene to trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"Their conditions are described as critical. The driver of the car was uninjured and the families of those involved have been notified.

"The road remained closed for four hours while specially trained officers examined the scene.

"Witnesses are asked to call Staffordshire Police quoting reference 209."
