The 12-year-old boy tripped and fell against the table which splintered on one side.

A piece of wood, between two and three inches long, embedded into his right thigh.

But the boy remained stuck to the table as a crew from Dudley fire station arrived.

The accident happened at the family's home in the London Fields area of Dudley, at 8.40am today.

Firefighters spent around 30 minutes cutting through the table with a power saw and then a hand saw to release the boy from the table.

He was taken to Russells Hall Hospital for the piece of wood to be removed from his leg and to have a check up.

Watch Commander Keith Hampton said the boy remained calm and was given headphones with music to listen to by the firefighters during the rescue.

"It was an unusual one," he said.
