Delays stretched back to J5 for Castle Bromwich and onto the Aston Expressway - one of the main routes out of Birmingham.

West Midlands Fire Service, paramedics, police and Highways England attended the scene, just after 8.15am.

Several vehicles were involved including one that had its roof removed by fire fighters.

Neil Spencer, a spokesman for WMFS, said: "We had a call at 8.36 from the Highways Agency telling us there had been a collision on the M6 northbound between junctions 6 and 7. It occurred in Lane 3 which is referred to as the outside lane.

"The incident involved five cars in collision. We sent three fire engines with five fire fighters on each. One person was trapped and crews attempted to release her using cutting gear.

"A woman was removed from the car with suspected spine injuries and was being taken to Sandwell Hospital.

"The stop message came in at 9.21 and we left the incident with the Police in charge."

An eye witness added: "I drove past and saw the roof being cut off and there were several cars piled into each other. Some firemen were standing by ushering the traffic through to try and stop bottle necking.

"The traffic was absolute gridlock from J6 all the way up to just before J7."
