Caught on camera: Van driver given 'no chance to stop' before hitting pedestrian

This is the moment a pedestrian was hit by a van as he stepped into the road at the last second.

The man was obscured by a van parked on the left hand side, meaning the driver had no time to stop.

He was left with minor injuries only and West Midlands Police today released the footage, which was captured on Melchett Road in the Kings Norton area of Birmingham last Thursday.

A force spokesman said: "We're releasing the footage to show everyone the danger of crossing the road between parked cars.

"The video shows the van driver's view as he travelled down the road. A van parked on the left hand side blocks a pedestrian waiting to cross from view of oncoming traffic, until virtually the last second.

"When the pedestrian steps into the road, the van driver has no time to react and the two collide. Luckily the pedestrian only suffered minor injuries, as the outcome could have been much worse.

"We would advise everyone to avoid crossing between parked vehicles wherever possible."

The force advised people to:

  • Find a place where there is plenty of space between two cars

  • Check that neither car is about to move – look out for drivers in the cars, lights and engines

  • Don’t cross near large vehicles, you’re more likely to be in a blind spot where drivers cannot see you

  • Walk to the outside edge of the cars and wait here, so that you can be seen by drivers and you can look around for traffic

  • Use the green cross code- stop, look and listen
