After collecting the dog they returned to station and contacted the RSPCA in order for them to come and collect it, a spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said.

Councillor Pete Smith, who had been passing by the scene at the time, said: "As the crowd got bigger, the fire service arrived and after some time two firefighters, on ladders, reached the dog, calmed it down and made it safe.

"One firefighter forced the window open so he could place the dog safely inside the first floor flat, to the cheers of the on-looking crowd.

"I was passing by and witnessed this.

"How relieved we all were when the firemen got to reach the stranded dog and secure its safety.

"All praise to the Fire Service, for whom no day must be the same."
