CCTV evidence showed the driver - who was aged just 15 at the time - was speeding when he hit Zainab Bibi, and did not take evasive action to avoid the 68-year-old, only sounding the car horn.

The teen - who is now aged 16 - sped away from the scene before abandoning the car in a street in Ward End.

The teenager, who bought the Fiat Marea himself in the weeks before the crash, was arrested after handing himself into police.

Mrs Bibi, who was from Birmingham, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after she was hit trying to cross Burney Lane in Alum Rock, but died several hours after the July 14 crash.

The teenager - who cannot be named for legal reasons - admitted death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to three years at a Youth Offenders Institute at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop and reporting an accident and will be disqualified from driving for four years.

PC Karl Davies, from the force's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The court heard how he was arrogant and showing off for passengers.

Mrs Bibi was an innocent victim of such dangerous behaviour; and her loss has left a big hole for the family. Driving a car whether underage or without a licence can ruin lives."
