IN PICTURES: Two treated for smoke inhalation as firefighters battle Staffordshire barn blaze

A large scale barn fire was fought by firefighters from seven different stations, with two people being treated for smoke inhalation.

Around 1,000 tonnes of straw was caught up in the blaze, which happened last night on Wheaton Ashton Road, Mitton.

Firefighters, who were called to the scene at 8.17pm last night, were worried about the fire spreading to a nearby building containing animals, and set up two hose reel jets to protect it.

Two men from the farm suffered from smoke inhalation and received oxygen therapy from the fire service. They refused to go to hospital and was given advice by the West Midlands Ambulance service.

They were told to call the hospital if they had any unexpected symptoms.

The fire was scaled down at 12.39am, leaving two crews at the scene.

One crew from Penkridge stayed at the scene this morning to make sure the fire didn't re-ignite.

Suzie Wheaton, a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance, said: "We were called at approximately 9.40pm. There were two patients at the scene for smoke inhalation.

"Both declined hospital treatment. They were given advice and left at the scene with their families.

"We had one ambulance and a community first responder on the scene."
