Pedestrian, 70, seriously injured after being hit by lorry in Brierley Hill

A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry in Brierley Hill today, prompting police to advise motorists to avoid the area.

The 70-year-old man was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance with serious head and chest injuries. His condition is described as stable.

Paramedics were called at 10.15am just before 10am to Hurst Lane near to the Enterprise Trading Estate.

Hurst Lane, near Merry Hill shopping centre, was closed in both directions between Pedmore Road and Narrowboat Way following the smash.

Two ambulances, two paramedics and the air ambulance from Cosford were called.

Jamie Arrowsmith, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "On arrival at the scene crews discovered a pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 60s, who was suffering from a reduced level of consciousness.

"He was treated for serious injuries to his head and chest. In order to stabilise his condition he was anaesthetised at the scene by the doctor from the air ambulance.

"He was then transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham by land ambulance on alert. The doctor travelled with the patient on the back of the ambulance to continue treatment en-route."

Pc Damian Gibson said: "I would like to hear from anyone who has not already spoken to a police officer. Please contact us so that we can establish how this man came about his injuries.

"The driver of the lorry has been spoken to and is co-operating fully with the investigation team".
