Emergency services also assessed a teacher at Holy Trinity School in Kidderminster after they had all complained of feeling unwell.

The school was evacuated and temporarily closed. No one required hospital treatment and the school said the exact cause of the problem was still being looked into.

Children were assessed by paramedics at 11.30am but no one required hospital treatment. Youngsters were allowed in to neighbouring St George's school to keep warm.

John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The school was evacuated after a number of pupils reported feeling nauseous and having sore throats.

"Nine pupils, all aged between 12 and 16, and also a staff member from the school were assessed by medics.

"Following assessment they were all discharged and did not require further treatment."

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus to enter the building and found the hazard had been restricted to a laboratory, which was ventilated.

Police also helped evacuate the building but said they were not treating the incident as suspicious.

Pupils and teachers were allowed back following consultation with the fire service.

A school spokeswoman said: "Due to an unidentified odor within the school buildings, the emergency services were called and students evacuated for their safety with the emergency services responding in a coordinated manor, very quickly giving the all clear and that it was a false alarm."

Headteacher Pamela Leek-Wright added: "As head, I would like to thank emergency services for their prompt and professional response.

"A huge vote of thanks to St. George's School who opened up their hall to our younger students to keep them warm, offering toast and hot chocolate.
