The driver escaped serious injury after the drama, on the northbound M6 just past junction 4 in Coleshill at around 10am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "The lorry had ended up on its drivers' side blocking the hard shoulder, inside and middle lanes of the motorway.

"Thankfully the driver, a man in his 50s, had managed to get out of the cab. Upon assessment, ambulance staff found he had sustained an elbow injury in the incident. He was given pain relief before being taken to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

One lane is open past the scene of the accident while emergency road resurfacing takes place on the 200m of severely damaged carriageway.

Delays of 40 minutes from Corley Services remain.
