PICTURED: Driver cut free from car and airlifted to hospital after Staffordshire crash

A man suffered a serious head injury and was airlifted to hospital after a collision between two vans and a car near Shenstone.

The incident happened around 10.15am this morning on the southbound A38 between Weeford Island and Bassetts Pole.

The driver of the car, in his 50s, had to be cut free by fire crews. The injury to his head caused a slight loss of consciousness and he was anaesthetised and taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital by Air Ambulance.

The man was also treated for suspected chest injuries.

Another man, in his 30s, who was in the front passenger seat of the car suffered minor injuries to his hand and knee but was discharged from the scene.

While an 18-year-old man from one of the vans involved was treated for an arm injury but was not taken to hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, a paramedic area support officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire air ambulance to the scene.

Staffordshire Police have closed both sides of the road while the Collision Investigation Unit examines the scene.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
