The officer was involved in a search for the man, who was classed as a missing person, when she came across him in St Mary's Place.

Staffordshire Police allege that the man then attacked the officer as she tried to deal with him.

A force spokesman said: "Two members of the public came to the officer's aid and helped to pull the man off the officer and restrain him until more officers arrived to provide backup."

"Staffordshire Police is very grateful to them for their assistance in helping to protect the officer from further injury. Without their intervention, the incident could have resulted in a much more serious outcome for the officer who escaped with relatively minor injuries.

Darren Neil Rook aged 34 of Newport Road, Stafford was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder. He was appearing magistrates today.
