Suspect held by passers-by as driver killed in crash on main Black Country road

A suspect was held by passers-by after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash which claimed the life of a driver in Warley today.

West Midlands Police said they had a flood of 999 calls after the crash, on the A4123 Wolverhampton Road between Bleakhouse Road and Clent Road in Warley at 9.21am.

A red Ford Ka collided with a blue VW Pasat, and witnesses told officers a person ran off after the crash. He was held by members of the public on Bleakhouse Road before being handed over to police.

The 26-year-old has since been arrested .

He and a 24-year-old woman from the Pasat were taken to hospital. Both are from Birmingham.

Sgt Neil Higgins said: "Despite the best efforts of passers-by, police officers and medics, nothing could be done to save the life of the 25-year-old Ka driver who was declared dead at the scene.

"The family of the deceased have been informed of their loss and are being supported by experienced family liaison officers."

The road was closed for around six hours while collision reconstruction specialists worked at the scene supported by forensic teams.

Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police should call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "One of the drivers was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.

"A man who was driving the other car had knee pain. He was treated at the scene and taken to Sandwell Hospital.

"His female passenger had back pain, cuts to her head and a suspected abdominal injury. Treatments were given by crews at the scene before taking her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."
