Four men were in the car, which left the road and ended up outside St Marks Community Project in Thimblemill Road at around 10.45pm.

One man, who was out of the car by the time paramedics arrived, went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene. He was named locally on Sunday afternoon as Richie Nelson.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "A man, believed to be in his 30s, was trapped in the wreckage and was also in cardiac arrest. A team of doctors and ambulance staff worked to successfully resuscitate him. Fire service colleagues worked around the medical team, who continued to administer emergency treatment, to carefully release the man from the wreckage."

He was said to have chest, abdominal and leg injuries and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

A third man, in his 30s, had been thrown from the car and was found underneath it. He was taken to the same hospital to be treated for abdominal and pelvic injuries.

A fourth victim was left with minor injures and was taken to Sandwell Hospital.

Meanwhile, a woman was trapped in the wreckage of her car for an hour after a crash in Oldbury this morning.

Five ambulances were called to the junction of the A4123 and Titford Road, Oldbury, just before 1am on Sunday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Two cars had been involved in a significant collision; the engine of one of the cars had ended up 50 metres away.

"The driver of this car, a 27-year-old woman, was knocked out and had sustained a serious head injury and fractures to her leg and pelvis."

She was cut free and taken to hospital, while the four men in the second car were described as walking wounded.
